Get Your News in the News |

Last month I wrote
about creative marketing ideas to get your news published. This
month I would like to share the importance of the press release.
Simply stated, a press release is like a resume. The goal of a
resume is to get attention that will lead to an interview and a
job. The goal of a press release is to get attention that will
lead to an interview and a story. Just like you expect job
applicants to send you a resume that looks like a resume,
reporters expect you to send a press release that looks like a
press release. Below are the seven basic elements of a press
release.
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
These words should
appear in the upper left-hand margin, just under your letterhead.
You should capitalize every letter.
Contact
Information:
Skip a line or two after release statement and list
the name, title, telephone and fax numbers of your company
spokesperson (the person with the most information). It is
important to give your cell/home number since reporters often work
on deadlines and may not be available until after hours.
Headline:
Skip two lines after your contact information and use a boldface
type.(This is very important- needs to be strategic and have an
angle.)
Dateline:
This should be the city your press release is issued from and the
date you are mailing your release.
Lead
Paragraph:
The first paragraph needs to grasp the reader's
attention and should contain the relevant information to your
message such as the five W's (who, what, when, where, why).
Text:
The
main body of your press release where your message should fully
develop.
Recap:
At the lower left hand corner of your last page restate your
product's specifications, highlight a product release date.
Here is a
template to format the above information:
Boost your media
potential by doing your research and reviewing the creative media
ideas we discussed last month such as calling the reporter that
covers your industry, reading the paper and then submit a savvy
press release.
On Thursday,
April 24, 2003 from 6-8 p.m. Suzanne Mulvehill present one of her
most popular seminars titled, “Get your News in the News.” The
first ½ hour is free for all and will cover strategies for using
the B2B Media Guide. To register, go to
www.profit-strategies.com or
www.palmbeaches.org. The fee for the seminar is $35.00 for
Chamber members and $45.00 for non-Chamber members. |

Are Saying
About This Book: "No
matter how successful you were in corporate America, you know
nothing about becoming an entrepreneur. I know because I was the
President/CEO of four companies before I became an entrepreneur. I
could have used this book."
Sigmund Goodwin
Vice-President
The Radcliff Company "How
I wished that I had had this precious and practical tool to help
me in my escape from Corporate America! After 15 years in “Fortune
50” Corporations I was convinced that the “crossing” was not
possible. Practical advice such as “what to do until the money
flows” would have greatly eased the transition for me. Negative
corporate management’s reinforcement about the “big bad world” and
not realizing that it didn’t have to be an all or nothing
transition delayed my ultimately successful escape by years. This
book will be an entrepreneurial bible."
