Creative Media Marketing:
Beyond the Press Release |
|
While press releases are great, there
is more you can do to facilitate getting your news published. Many
of the stories that I pitch to reporters get covered without
sending a press release first. Why? Three simple reasons: I have
an established relationship with the reporter, I know it is an
industry the reporter covers and make the story newsworthy. My
goal it to get their interest FIRST – and then have them ask me to
send a press release. Here are a few other strategies that either
I or my clients use:
-
Make your news
“newsworthy.”
The way to make your story newsworthy is to develop an angle so
that it is interesting to a lot of people. I recall working with
Carole Clancy, a former reporter at the South Florida Business
Journal. She shared that if people would take more time to
develop their stories, they would have a better chance of
getting a reporter’s attention. To develop your angle, ask
yourself the 5 W’s – Who would be interested in my story? What
is different about my news? When should I tell this story? Where
should I pitch my story? And perhaps most importantly, Why is my
story unique?
-
Meet the media by
attending events and mixers.
Reporters go where people go. Next time you are at an event or
business function, make it a point to seek out the media and
introduce yourself. If you don’t know if a reporter is at a
particular event, ask someone who coordinated the event.
Introduce yourself to reporters, ask them what industries they
cover and then share something unique about your business. If
they do not cover your industry, ask who does and then follow
up.
-
Read the paper.
I have seen more
clients get their stories published in newspapers or journals by
reading a story and making a follow up call to the reporter who
wrote they story than any other way. Claudia Barrington of South
Florida Thermography is a perfect example. When she read a story
written by Lucy Chabot in the South Florida Business Journal a
year or so ago that discussed breast cancer screening, she
realized that a new type of screening service, one that she
provides, was not mentioned, she called Lucy. Claudia was
invited to write the guest column for the next month on the
benefits of thermography. Several months later, she was invited
to write another guest column for breast cancer awareness month.
-
Request editorial
calendars.
Most business journals and magazines have editorial calendars.
An editorial calendar is a listing of the stories that will be
covered in the upcoming year. You can get a copy of an editorial
calendar by calling the journal or magazine and requesting one
or through the South Florida Media Guide. Editorial calendars
give you a “heads up” regarding upcoming stories. When I was
starting my business, I reviewed the editorial calendar for the
Daily Business Review
and learned that they were going to be covering a story on
consultants. I called and asked to speak with the reporter who
was covering that story. I ended up being interviewed for the
story and was photographed for the front cover of that special
edition.

Are Saying
About This Book: "No
matter how successful you were in corporate America, you know
nothing about becoming an entrepreneur. I know because I was the
President/CEO of four companies before I became an entrepreneur. I
could have used this book."
Sigmund Goodwin
Vice-President
The Radcliff Company "How
I wished that I had had this precious and practical tool to help
me in my escape from Corporate America! After 15 years in “Fortune
50” Corporations I was convinced that the “crossing” was not
possible. Practical advice such as “what to do until the money
flows” would have greatly eased the transition for me. Negative
corporate management’s reinforcement about the “big bad world” and
not realizing that it didn’t have to be an all or nothing
transition delayed my ultimately successful escape by years. This
book will be an entrepreneurial bible."
