Embrace the Fear!
|
|
By: Mike
Hickey
Franklin Delano Roosevelt said
it best:
“There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”
How often do we see and hear those words? We hear them on radio,
on television, in magazines, in newspapers, from people we know,
from people we don’t know. After more than half a century no one
has improved upon that thought.
But guess what? We don’t pay any attention to it.
I’m going to repeat that: “WE DON’T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO IT!”
And we should, because it is fear that stops us from getting what
we want out of life – all of us, me included. In fact, maybe me
especially since my wife and I decided to become entrepreneurs.
Everything I have ever been afraid of in life – everything! – has
been coming up for me and threatening to get in the way of
success.
I have noticed that my fears can express themselves in two ways:
overtly and covertly.
You know about overt fear: the tightness in the chest, the jangled
nerves, the indecision, the overwhelming desire for ice cream. At
least you know what’s going on.
Covert fear, though, is a very sneaky thing; it masquerades as
something else. I have found that frequently if I am stressed when
faced with something new and scary it looks as if it is my wife’s
doing. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but I know it’s
her fault.
So what have I done about that? In my former life in sales I read
reams of articles, listened to miles of tapes and attended myriad
seminars about fear and how to deal with it.
I spent hours trying to determine what it is that I am afraid of.
I drove myself crazy trying to analyze it. I agonized while
attempting to “push through it.” I created structures designed to
circumvent it. I entered into buddy systems with friends and
colleagues to help me with it.
It may be that you have done all those things, too, and I can hear
you saying, “But none of it worked!”
None of it worked for me, either, because I was going about it all
wrong. I was trying to deal with fear when I should have been
embracing it.
Now, that’s just about the screwiest thing you’ve ever heard,
isn’t it?
Well, it really isn’t, and if you will bear with me for a moment
longer you will see why.
Fear is a part of human nature. It was originally put into us as a
protective device, a sort of warning signal telling us to get the
heck away from a dangerous situation.
This device worked great when we were hunter-gatherers in a
primeval landscape where danger lurked behind every rock and tree.
It still comes in pretty handy when I hear a horn blare and I jump
back out of the way of an oncoming car, or I dash into the house
when I discover the neighbor’s pit bull has gotten loose into my
back yard.
Unfortunately, fear also pops up in me every time I think about
making that dreaded phone call (or approaching a prospect or
meeting with a banker, or almost anything at all having to do with
the business). Now, you have to admit that these are not exactly
life-threatening situations, but the fear device creates physical
and emotional reactions that feel the same as if they were.
O.K., once I knew why that device is there and why I feel those
emotions, I was able to embrace (there’s that word again!) the
fear. Here’s what I have been doing:
I start by recognizing that the fear is a part of me and will keep
coming up. When it does:
First – I see it for what it is.
Then – I set it aside.
I acknowledge the fear by saying to myself, “Oh, there are those
feelings again.” Then I set it aside and go on with what I was
about to do. I actually picture myself picking something up and
setting it aside. Then I turn back to the task at hand.
Remember, there are two elements involved. First there is the
phone call (or approach, or whatever), then there is the fear.
Pick up the fear, set it aside and then turn back and make the
phone call. It is only a phone call.
“There is nothing to fear but fear itself.”
That FDR was one smart guy. I would have liked having him as a
business partner.

Others Are Saying
About This Book: "No
matter how successful you were in corporate America, you know
nothing about becoming an entrepreneur. I know because I was the
President/CEO of four companies before I became an entrepreneur. I
could have used this book."
Sigmund Goodwin
Vice-President
The Radcliff Company
"How I wished that I had had this precious and practical tool to
help me in my escape from Corporate America! After 15 years in
“Fortune 50” Corporations I was convinced that the “crossing” was
not possible. Practical advice such as “what to do until the money
flows” would have greatly eased the transition for me. Negative
corporate management’s reinforcement about the “big bad world” and
not realizing that it didn’t have to be an all or nothing
transition delayed my ultimately successful escape by years. This
book will be an entrepreneurial bible."
